When you're considering which credit card or credit line to aquire, you should rank your importance for each of the following :

  • The annual fee

  • Rewards program
    Does your card have a membership rewards program? Expect to get a good range of free flights, catalogue purchases and/or cash back.
  • Start up and on-going Bonuses
    Look for the provider's punchline offer but watch out for gimmicks. Are you getting real value out of it or does it just make you feel "better"?

No annual fee

Why pay for credit that you may only use a few times a month? Cards that have no annual fee can be a good first card for poeple that do not intend to overly use the credit it provides. Pros: No initial cash outlay required to get started. Cons: Usually means that no membership rewards program is attached to your card. Make sure you are happy with the second and future year's fee.

Reasons you should not apply for a credit card

* You are under 18. Forget it. Get a loan from a family member if you wanted a credit card for cash withdrawl. Cash withdrawl are at the card's highest interest rate (0% to 19%). * If you only want a source of cash to be available for your business then you don't need a credit card, you need a line of credit
